3 Day Murchison Falls Safari

Destinations
  • Uganda

Overview

The 1951 film ‘The African Queen’ starring American classic film icon Humphrey Bogart (won his only Oscar for his role in this movie) and Katharine Hepburn was filmed in Murchison Falls National Park.

Notable visitors to Murchison include Winston Churchill, Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway, Prince William, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, and several British royals.

This large park is commonly referred to as the “Summit of Adventure.”

Murchison lies at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley, where the sweeping Bunyoro escarpment tumbles into vast, palm-dotted savanna. First gazetted as a game reserve in 1926, it is Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area, hosting 76 species of mammals and 451 bird species.

The Park is bisected by the Victoria Nile, which plunges 45m over the remnant rift valley wall, creating the dramatic Murchison Falls, the centerpiece of the park and the final event in an 80km stretch of rapids. This is the hardest waterfall anywhere in the world.

The mighty cascade drains the last of the river’s energy, transforming it into a broad, placid stream that flows quietly across the rift valley floor into Lake Albert. This stretch of river provides one of Uganda’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles. Regular visitors to the riverbanks include elephants, giraffes, and buffaloes; while hippos, Nile crocodiles, and aquatic birds are permanent residents.

Lush Africa Safaris will take you on a wildlife adventure like no other as you take a boat ride on the Nile to the Bottom of Murchison Falls, Game-drive in the vast savannah grassland and Chimpanzee and other primates tracking in Kaniyo Pabidi Forest.

3 Day Itinerary

At 6:30 am, a Lush Africa Safaris guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive you towards the Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary. This is a special occasion to track the extremely endangered White Rhino at Zziwa. You will not only witness the most successful Rhino breeding project in the world but also contribute to their survival. From here, you will proceed to Masindi town where you will access Murchison via Kichumbanyobo gate. Take a scenic ride under the shades of green, cross the seasonal Sambiya River to the Nile River, continue and cross by ferry to the North Bank. Settle in at the magnificent Paraa Safari Lodge. Later in the evening, take a sunset game drive and end your day in an adventurous style.  Accommodation at your preferred lodging facility.

Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Wake up to the sounds of nature and join your driver/guide on an early morning game drive. The north-bank section is a savannah that is naturally decorated with Borassus palms, acacia trees, and riverine woodland.

Look out for elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, Rothschild giraffes, hippos, waterbucks, bushbucks, and Jackson’s Hartebeest among others. The birdlife is also rich with species like the Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Grey Herons, African Fish Eagle, and Saddle-billed Storks among others.

After a great game drive, return to the Lodge for lunch. At 2 pm, transfer down to the pier/dock on the Nile River. Get on board and undergo briefing by the boat guide. Against the current, start your boat-cruise heading to the ‘mouth’ of the waterfalls. En route, you are likely to see hippos in the water and the Nile Crocodile lining the riverbank. Other animal species graze nearby and come to the waterhole for a drink. This usually means action as the crocs are always ready to pounce at the other animals that come to the waterhole.

Birding enthusiasts are likely to spot the majestic African Fish Eagles, Pied Kingfishers, Malachite Kingfishers, Red-throated bee-eaters, and egret species among others. The boat shall pull over close to a rock before the “Devil’s Cauldron”. Take pictures, sit on the rocks, and exploit every moment with the bottom of the Murchison Falls in your full view. Disembark from the boat and take a hike to the top of Murchison Falls. At the top, you will bear witness to the great wonder of nature as the Mighty Nile funnels itself through a 7 – 8-meter gorge. With incredible force, the Nile roars and groans creating a permanent spillage and a set of rainbow arches. Again – at the risk of boring you – this is the hardest waterfall on earth. After watching the dramatic waterfall, join your driver/guide and ride back to the hotel.
