We Don't Just Know Africa. It's Who We Are.

Our story didn’t start in a boardroom. It began on the red-earth roads of Uganda, the Pearl of Africa. This is our home.

Our Story

Our first safari wasn’t a vacation; it was our childhood. We were born and raised in Uganda, a country Winston Churchill rightly called ‘the Pearl of Africa’. We grew up in an environment of incredible natural wealth, where the source of the Nile River was nearby and the Rwenzori Mountains stood on the horizon. Our home was a habitat for over 1,000 species of birds, and we learned to identify them by their calls long before we could read about them in a book.

This upbringing gave us a deep appreciation for the wild, a perspective that led us to careers as journalists and broadcasters. Our job was to tell Africa’s stories to the world, tracking the tree-climbing lions of Queen Elizabeth National Park and documenting the lives of mountain gorillas in Bwindi. But our curiosity didn’t stop at the border. The same passion that drove us to understand our home pushed us to explore further, to see how the story of the wild changed across the continent. We followed that curiosity south, into the vast, arid landscapes of Botswana and the dramatic coastlines of South Africa.

We learned that Africa speaks in different dialects. The language of the lush, dense forests of Uganda is different from the language of the dry, open Kalahari. We spent years learning to speak both. We created Lush Africa Safaris to share this deeper, pan-African connection. We wanted to design journeys that go beyond a checklist of animals, connecting you to the narrative of the landscape and the rhythm of the wild.

This story, this perspective, became the cornerstone of Lush Africa Safaris. It is the standard of authenticity and personal care that we maintain within our own team and expect from every partner we work with. We design every journey as if it were for our own family, because to us, it is. This is not just our business. It is our life’s work and our deepest passion.

Our Philosophy

A Storyteller's Perspective

We see the world through a documentarian’s eye. We design journeys that have a narrative arc, revealing the story of the ecosystem you’re exploring.

Our Personal Guarantee

We have personally visited, vetted, and verified every lodge, camp, and guide we use. If we haven’t stayed there ourselves, we won’t send you there. It’s that simple.

A Commitment to Positive Impact

We have personally visited, vetted, and verified every lodge, camp, and guide we use. If we haven’t stayed there ourselves, we won’t send you there. It’s that simple.

Abbey Rafsanjan

Founder, CEO Lush Africa Safaris
With a 15-year career in wildlife broadcasting and journalism, Abbey's work has always been about telling Africa's stories. This life as a storyteller took him to nearly every major game park across East and Southern Africa, providing him with an unparalleled, on-the-ground understanding of the continent's diverse ecosystems. But his true passion lies deeper than the camera lens. He has an intuitive understanding of animal and bird behavior, knowing not just where they live, but how. This deep connection led him to volunteer at sanctuaries like Uganda's Ngamba Island, studying chimpanzee behavior up close. Abbey's expertise is rooted in a profound respect for the wild, and he crafts itineraries that not only reveal its intricate narrative but also contribute directly to its conservation. Favorite Safari Memory: Tracking a pack of wild dogs on foot in Mana Pools, Zimbabwe.
