Ngamba Island gives you the opportunity to get up-close and personal with man’s closest cousins – chimpanzees, sharing a staggering 98.8 percent of their DNA with humans.
The chimp sanctuary, established in 1998, is home to about 48 apes, either rescued from illegal trade or orphaned for one way or another. 1 Day Itinerary
If you’re on a one-day program, there are two sessions for visits to Ngamba Island; the morning session begins at 9am and ends at about 12:45pm, whereas the afternoon session begins at 1pm and ends at 5pm. It is amazing to watch the chimps scramble and acrobatically get hold of the food. Many times, they do human things that will make the hair at the back of your head stand.

Look out for chimpanzee feeding sessions – which you can participate in too. You can partake in the ‘Challenge the Chimp Critical Thinking’ game, Chimp Nest Preparation, and visit fishing villages; go for sunset cruises, community cultural experiences, boat cruises, borne fires and even go fishing as well.

Overnight experience is available, and guests can spend a night/s in luxury-tented units. There are series of vaccination required to interact with the chimpanzees as a day’s keeper and other forms of physical contact with the chimpanzees. Remember we can pass on diseases to these animals and vice-versa.
